Overview

Silence Broken is a Text Chat service for people from the BAME & Muslim community and other religious backgrounds, who are isolated from their families and communities due to identifying, or are considering to identify themselves as LGBT+ or have thoughts and worries around gender dysphoria/identity. The aim is to provide a safe place for people to be able to talk about their feelings and thoughts in a confidential way and help support them through what may be a scary and conflicting experience. We also provide support to family members and friends.

I set up Silence Broken as a friend of a friend reached out to me to talk about how they felt and what they were going through and that they were considering suicide. They were a Muslim gay person but could never express themselves the way they wanted to or discuss any concerns they had. From telephone calls, it moved to text messaging and this continued. They passed my details on to others they knew in similar situations and word has spread through word of mouth.

I have a background in working with the most vulnerable and hard to reach communities and have worked in various roles supporting young people, adults and families for over 10 years. My employers include local councils, a small charity, an education provider, Yoga & Mediation, DWP and a suicide prevention service. I am qualified and have experience in providing information, advice, guidance and coaching on various issues including mental and emotional wellbeing, depression, anxiety, low confidence and self-esteem, domestic violence, forced marriages, health and disability, budgeting, housing and homelessness. I also have experience in teaching a range of courses including accredited courses and self-help programs developed by myself.

We are an online/text service available across the UK every day from 6pm to 11pm.
